During the war, the western front was dominated by the horrors of trench warfare which posed major challenges to the medical services on both sides in organizing field hygiene, preventive medicine and medical treatment of the wounded.
In this age of great armies -  prevention of infectious diseases, effectively treat injuries, and ensuring a comprehensive supply chain was of great importance. Military personnel of those days were exposed to terribly traumatizing situations which are hard to imagine to this day.
